Wudang Mountain consists of nine palaces, all of which are its soul. Each palace is a legend in itself, like nine brilliant stars echoing one another, collectively forming a vast and mysterious Taoist temple and abbey system. As the foremost of these nine palaces, the Yuxu Palace, located on the northern slope of Wudang Mountain, is hailed as the "Best Palace in the Mountains", making it an essential destination for exploring this sacred Taoist site.

The Yuxu Palace, initially built during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty, is one of the largest palaces in Wudang Mountains' architectural complex and was the largest Taoist palace in China during the Ming Dynasty. Its architectural hierarchy is rigorous, with multiple courtyards that rival those of the Forbidden City in the imperial capital.

The Yuxu Palace, fully named "Xuantian Yuxu Palace", derived its name from Emperor Zhenwu, the Supreme Deity worshipped on Wudang Mountain, who was ennobled as the "Emperor of Xuantian" and the "Yuxu Diviner".

On one hand, “Yu” (jade),in Taoism culture, has been a symbol of purity, nobility, and sanctity since ancient times. The luster of jade mirrors Taoists’ pursuit of an untainted spirit, embodying the essence of heaven and earth.
On the other hand, "xu" (ethereality) embodies profound Taoism wisdom. Laozi said, "Attain the utmost emptiness, and maintain steadfast tranquility." "Xu" represents a realm of ethereality, a clarity of the mind achieved by discarding distractions and an inclusive heart as well.

The Yuxu Palace, initially built during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty, symbolizes the imperial Taoism sites of that era. It has witnessed countless religious rituals performed by emperors, serving as a place to pray for national peace and people's well-being. Despite suffering from fires and floods, the Yuxu Palace still stands firm, and restoration works beginning in 2007 have revived its past glory.

At the entrance to the Yuxu Palace, the once towering gatehouse now remains only as a broken frame. Upon closer inspection, some parts of the walls have collapsed, revealing the brick-and-stone structure inside. The bricks and stones, once bright and vibrant, have taken on a dull hue over time, and the cracks in the walls resemble the wrinkles of age, intertwining across the surface.

The remnants of the main hall are particularly striking. The eaves, which may have once soared high like birds taking flight, are now in ruins, leaving only jagged and uneven edges. Even after restoration, the marks of time remain: peeling paint has exposed the wooden texture, and the once exquisite carvings have faded under the erosion of time, though some elegant lines can still be faintly discerned.

Once, Taoists, clad in robes and holding feather dusters, flooded here, meditating and cultivating their minds.
Today, although the Yuxu Palace still bears the scars of time, the restored areas serve as a testament to history and echoes of the past. The Wudang Tai Chi Conference is held here every year.

The layout of the palace is meticulously organized, featuring grand and rigorous central axes, an endless imperial pathway that stretches out of sight, five-tiered palace walls that follow the terrain and towering palaces that blend into the surrounding mountains, all of which evoke the feeling of being in an imperial palace, inspiring awe.

The Yuxu Palace retains the Yongle period’s architectural hierarchy of "five gates for the Son of Heaven and three gates for the feudal lords", a symbol of the reverence for rituals and order, with its internal structures, namely the Lecheng City, the Forbidden City, and the Wailecheng City, corresponding to the layout of Beijing’s "the Outer City – the Inner City – the Forbidden City", serving as the heart of the empire with the rhythm of history.

Wang Shizhen, a literary giant of the Ming Dynasty, once praised, "the summit of Mountain Taihe (the former name of Wudang Mountain) resembles Huacheng City (a mysterious imaginary city in Taoism culture, which appears temporarily and where Taoist masters guide followers’ pursuit of Taoism wisdom), and the Yuxu Palace seems like the E-pang Palace in the Qin Dynasty", highlighting its magnificent grandeur.

On both sides of the central axis of the palace stand four imperial stele pavilions, serving as guardians of history that narrate the Ming emperors' deep reverence for Wudang Mountain. Within these pavilions rests a colossal stone sculpture weighing 120 tons with the name of Imperial Stele on the Back of Bixi, an imaginary tortoise-shaped animal. The inscription "Yongle jinling and Shengzhi Bei" (the Stele inscribed with Emperor Yongle 's Imperial Ban and Edict) bears witness to Emperor Yongle's prayers for the stability of his reign.

Among the twelve existing Bixi steles on Wudang Mountain, the Yuxu Palace boasts four. These masterpieces of stone carving art in Ming Dynasty are rare in both size and quantity, highlighting the status of Wudang Mountains in the hearts of the Ming imperial family. The pavilions not only stand as historical monuments but also as evidence of Wudang Mountain's status as the imperial family temple of the Ming Dynasty.

The splay walls on both wings of the palace gate are inlaid with Qionghua patterns on glaze tiles, which catch the eyes first upon entering the palace. Qionghua is a China-specific flower breed, a symbol of purity and elegance. The once glittering glaze tiles, now slightly dimmed by the erosion of time, still reveal the exquisite craftsmanship of the craftsmen of that era. The patterns on the screen walls, depicting flowers, birds, fish, insects, and mythological legends, are exquisite and lifelike, captivating countless tourists to pause and marvel at their unique artistic charm.
