Ban Ki-moon and Zhang Jun Discuss BFA's Future De…

Ban Ki-moon, Chairman of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) met with the visiting BFA Secretary General Zhang Jun in Seoul on 22nd May. They have exchanged views and reached broad consensus on the future development and priorities of the Forum.

Ban Ki-moon congratulated Zhang Jun again on his appointment and expressed his appreciation for the consistent support of China, the host country. Chairman Ban emphasized that President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government have attached great importance to the Forum, from which the Forum’s development greatly benefit. The Forum also owes it to the continuous development of China. Ban Ki-moon noted, in face of multiple global and regional challenges, the Forum should hold on to its purpose, by forging political consensus and mutual trust,in promoting regional economic integration and sustainable development.

Zhang Jun expressed his gratitude to the Chinese leader and government for nomination, and Ban Ki-moon as well as the Board of Directors for appointment. Zhang Jun recalled that for several times, the Chinese President Xi Jinping have attended the BFA Annual Conferences and met with Chairman Ban Ki-moon, which have charted the course for development of Asia and the Forum. With the unwavering support of President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government, under the guidance of Chairman Ban Ki-moon and the Board of Directors and through common effort of the Boao Family,he is confident to bring the Forum’s work to higher level.

SG Zhang stated that at its new starting point, the Forum is dedicated to improve standards for high quality development,focus on Asia while broadening global partnership, chart the course for development and generate concrete action for the win-win development of Asia and beyond, as front runner and explorer. On practical level, head-of-state diplomacy should take the steer and the Forum should be high-end. We should gather momentum by conducting concrete cooperation and bringing tangible results.The Forum will build a global network for open and inclusive development. We should deliver strong and clear BFA messages through high-end communications.The Forum will build academic capacity to lead its way of development. And we will improve management with rules, regulations and capacity building.

Ban Ki-moon said that he full agrees on what the BFA needs to do. He has confidence in Secretary General Zhang Jun and able team of the BFA Secretariat. He hopes that the BFA, based in Asia with a global outlook, should bring into full play its role as bridge and platform and engage as well as lead the discussions on SDG, Climate Change, AI and other global issues, to bring consensus and facilitate the sustainable development of the world.
