WANG Xiaodong: Role of China for Future Medicine …

On the morning of 31 March 2023, Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) held a panel discussion on“Biopharmaceutical Innovation & the New Path of International Cooperation”. Foreign Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences Wang Xiaodong made remarks on future Cinese medicine industry and innovation.

Mr. Wang believes that the world has now realized that with a huge market, an increasingly high standard of living, the application of biological sciences knowledge and understanding of the system and many Chinese students who have studied all over the world serving China and the world’s pharmaceutical industry, the resilience of the "China force" could overcome future challenges and influence the world. He believes that the "China force" will produce better drugs so that the cost and standard of the entire industry will result in more affordable drugs and vaccines.

Mr. Wang talked about the innovation of technologies in the field of medicine. In his opinion, the digital revolution is accelerating medicine development. However, he believes that‘innovation is not just about surprise but also about the way we innovate correctly.’ He added that the digital revolution cannot change the rules of the game because physics and biology, which are fundamental to medicine, are not that easy to innovate so far.

In his concluding remarks, Mr. Wang emphasized that in the current uncertain world, everyone should focus more on our common goals and aim to alleviate the suffering of people around the world.
